It has been a week and a half since Merrick's birthday, and he checked a big milestone off the list today, so it's about time I write this update...I can hardly believe that it has just been a year and he has changed from this precious baby:
to this smiling, bright-eyed little boy:
to this smiling, bright-eyed little boy:
Mobility: He took his first steps this afternoon! After waking from his nap, he took one step as he was transferring from standing by the bookcase to the girls' bed, and then, a little later, he took four steps from me to Mark! Merrick is also quite a little monkey, and likes to climb on his little car, and can even get his little toes up on the baby gate...
Playing: He still really enjoys playing ball and rolling or throwing it back and forth with someone, and he recently started pushing cars and trucks around the room. I don't think anyone showed him how to do this; as far as I can tell, it must just be inherent boy knowledge. [Correction: Mark actually did show him this, but he said he also did the same thing with the girls and they had very little interest in it. So it must be a boy thing, to some extent.]
Sleeping: He has become a champion sleeper, and barely woke last time he had a cold. He still follows the schedule I described in last month's update, and we are extremely lucky that he goes down so easily both for naps and at night. We lay him down with his pacifier, cover him with a light blanket, and usually don't hear a peep. The boy really likes his sleep.

He also likes playing with rocks.
Merrick loves being with people, and his sense of humor is developing as well. If we're laughing, he joins in, and he loves to get people to laugh. He thinks being tickled and tickling others is really fun.
Noises: The good news: Merrick is
becoming more vocal, imitating a lot of sounds and words (truck, stack,
and a few others that aren't coming to mind) and has some new words that
he uses: dat (that), dow (down), all done, cup, up. He still trills
when he's happy and sad, which has sort of become his trademark.
The bad news: He has discovered that he can scream. Enough said.

Dearest Merrick,
It is hard to describe how much we love you and we are amazed at how much joy you have brought our family already in just one year. We are thankful for your happy, content spirit, and pray that you will continue to take in the world around you with the same curiosity and confidence that we have already seen you exude. I am in awe every day of the blessing you are and you will always be cherished and loved.
Love,
Mama and Daddy
